If you've never been to a class before you might want to ask a few questions:
What happens at a West Coast Swing class night?
At the start of the night there is a beginners' class covering some of the basic moves and techniques that you need to begin to dance West Coast Swing. This is followed by some time to practise what you've learnt with the other dancers in the class. Then there is an intermediate class, which usually takes an element of the beginners' class and extends it through a more complex short routine. You can join in with this class or, if you prefer at first, you can watch to see what happens! At the end of the night there is more 'freestyle' time to practise moves from either of the classes.
What do I wear?
Dance is a physical activity so wear something comfortable. There is no dress code for West Coast Swing, but most people wear jeans or trousers and a top that won’t restrict movement.
And what about shoes?
For West Coast Swing you need to wear something reasonably flat and flexible on your feet, with a smooth sole. Later on, if you want to, you can invest in 'proper' dance shoes. For ladies something with a small Cuban heel is suitable as shoes with a thinner, higher heel make it difficult to settle your weight back into the connection with your partner or to roll through your foot as you move.
Do I need to bring a partner?
No, in fact most people don’t. West Coast Swing is a social dance. We rotate partners within the class so all of the leaders get to dance with all of the followers. It helps to improve your skills of leading and following, and it’s a good way to get to know everyone!
Do I need any dance experience?
You don’t need any experience at all. Some people come to West Coast Swing from other dance disciplines, others have never danced before. It doesn’t matter. We’ll teach you the skills you need to dance West Coast Swing right from the beginning.
Will I be the only beginner?
Dancers of all levels come to the classes, from experienced ‘Westies’ to those who’ve never danced a step. We always start with a beginners’ class so people can join us at any time, so the chances are you won’t be the only one.
What if I need some help?
Just ask! There is always someone on hand to help if you want to go over something from the class again, or if there’s anything you want to know about West Coast Swing. You’ll find that your fellow dancers will be more than happy to help out and share their experience with you!
