What is West Coast Swing?

West Coast Swing is a partner dance that requires a true lead and follow, allowing a real connection between dance partners. The elements of extension and compression give West Coast Swing its characteristic elastic, in-and-out movement; while styling and syncopated footwork provide its sexy, sassy, signature style. West Coast is danced ‘in a slot’ with the follower travelling along a line of dance provided by the leader. There are basic 6-count (walk, walk, triple-step, triple-step) and 8-count (walk, walk, triple-step, walk, walk, triple-step) patterns which can be extended and varied as skills progress, allowing dancers to express their own style in musical interpretation.
